Context
Physical and digital environments increasingly intersect across commerce, manufacturing, logistics, mobility, education, culture, finance, healthcare, and other domains.
The term phygital is used across these environments, but its broad application can obscure whether physical and digital elements are operatively connected or merely present alongside one another.
Differentiation
Phygital interaction differs from the parallel presence of physical and digital elements because it requires a functional relation between the participating contexts.
It also differs from digital representation, channel-based presentation, or technology-assisted physical experience when no action, state change, signal, or access condition in one context produces a relevant response in the connected context.
System Role
Within connected environments, the phygital model provides a structural reference for examining the operative relation between physical and digital contexts.
It enables separation between physical-digital adjacency and functionally connected interaction while remaining independent of a specific device, interface, platform, industry, or implementation mechanism.
